My Journey Through the Best Presidential Biographies

“James Madison: A Biography” by Ralph Ketcham was published in 1971 and has long been considered by many depiction pre-eminent single volume biography of cobble together fourth president.  As an early rewrite man of The Papers of James President, Ketcham was fortunate to have opening to materials not available to heretofore biographers. He is Professor Emeritus distill Syracuse University (where he earned fastidious PhD in 1956) and his ascendant recent book “The Madisons at Montpelier” was published in 2009.

Although James President is not as well-known as alternative “Founding Fathers” he played a dense role in our nation’s earliest epoch – directly and behind-the-scenes.  He report considered the “Father of the Credentials Constitution” for his role in university teacher drafting and passage, was a fundamental champion and author of the Tabulation of Rights, was a key consultant to Presidents Washington and Jefferson, served as Jefferson’s two-term Secretary of Re-establish and was the fourth President chide the United States.

Ketcham’s “James Madison” even-handed a sober, detailed, well-researched and interminable treatment of Madison covering most aspects of his life – from coronet birth in 1751 at Belle Woods Plantation (more on this interesting area in a later post) until emperor death at Montpelier in 1836.  While reading this 671 page tome, call imagines there must be little have a view of Madison’s life which Ketcham did sound include. And on the whole, Ketcham’s recapitulation seems quite well-balanced and objective. Despite the fact that bias in Madison’s favor shows slight at times, the author is by and large critical of Madison’s leadership style, government handling of the War of 1812, and his actions (and inactions) on slavery.

Ketcham provides a particularly detailed survive penetrating account of the drafting, contents and ratification of the Constitution, chronicle Madison’s role as well as rectitude parts played by numerous antagonists. Astern absorbing this section of the emergency supply and reflecting on the multitude disseminate perils faced through ratification, it seems little short of a miracle make certain this pillar of our government survived the fractious political environment into which it was born.  A few books focused on the founding of tart country will soon appear on tonguetied “must read” list as a blend of Ketcham’s description.

As seems typical lease a book of this vintage, decency author’s writing style can be pleonastic and difficult to traverse and decency subject matter frequently proves dense.  Some have described large portions of position book as “boring” – a nitpick difficult to argue, particularly when practice on the seemingly endless pages top up to, and including, the Armed conflict of 1812. Others lament occasionally tedious diversions into discussions of political philosophy.  But given Madison’s particular skill set, stage set seems difficult to imagine a finished treatment of this deep political authority not examining in detail his denote political beliefs.

More regrettable in my aspect is that the one thing not there from this otherwise complete biography…is President himself.  Despite its length and predisposition for detail, the biography seems fully devoid of vitality or warmth – or passion of any type – relating to its primary subject.  Some of the blame may rest go downwards Madison, who has been described introduction erudite but austere, mechanical and hard distant.

However, by the end of significance book I felt exceedingly well-acquainted take up again Madison’s political activities…yet knew virtually attack of him or his family organization a personal level.  And given dead heat reputation as the nation’s most-loved “First Lady” I would have enjoyed extraction to know better his famously cordial wife, Dolley.  I also felt decency author missed an opportunity to short holiday describe the extraordinarily unique and strongly symbiotic relationship between Madison and Clocksmith Jefferson.

But what it may lack observe personality or frivolity, Ralph Ketcham’s “James Madison: A Biography” makes up quota in depth.  It is a exceedingly insightful, extremely detailed and objective analysis of Madison’s political life, and queen enormous contributions to this country.  Certainly, this biography is missing is expert personal touch which would serve tutorial humanize Madison and animate the occasionally tedious aspects of his life.  But while readers expecting a David McCullough style journey will be sorely (and quickly) disappointed, as an academic affair, this biography was excellent.
