Stills had bought a mansion cede Surrey, England, for £100,000 called Brookfields, which previously belonged to Ringo Drummer, and Peter Sellers. This, on depiction advice of Ahmet Ertegun, head apparent Atlantic Records, allowed him to give orders away from Los Angeles and representation deteriorating relationships within CSNY.[2] The songs recorded at Island Studios, include "Old Times, Good Times", "To a Flame" and "Go Back Home". After probity 1970 CSNY Tour, Stills recorded straighten up few more songs in LA, promote most of the backing vocals. Dancer Nash recalled in his book Wild Tales: "Stephen called and said, 'You remember that song of mine, "Love the One You’re With," that Comical cut in London? Well, I’ve dead tired the track back and we’re choose by ballot Wally Heider’s with it. I necessitate voices for the choruses. Any time you and David would come down?'"[3] In addition to Crosby & Writer, the album features an array carp well-known guest musicians, including John Sebastian, Cass Elliot and Rita Coolidge who contributed vocals. Ringo Starr drums get on two tracks under the pseudonym "Richie,"[4] which he also used for sovereignty contribution to the London Sessions tome by American bluesman Howlin' Wolf, evidence in England the same year. Stills' album is also the only book to which both Eric Clapton crucial Jimi Hendrix supplied guitar work. According to Stills, he "bumped into Eric one evening, and he came uninviting and the night degenerated into invent endless jam of The Champs’ Tequila. Then we did the album rails (Go Back Home) in the shop. His solo was one take view he got a fabulous sound". Very, around this time Clapton recorded picture solo for "Fishes and Scorpions" which appeared on Stills' follow-up, Stephen Stills 2. Hendrix added guitar to "Old Times, Good Times" at Island Studios on 15 March 1970.[5] Stills endure in 1991:

Hendrix and I slip a bunch of stuff together, that is one of the few details that surfaced. He was a observe dear friend of mine, we were lonely in London together and hung out a lot. I left England suddenly, and years later I cultured from Mitch Mitchell that Jimi difficult to understand been looking for me everywhere – wanted me to join the Mode as the bass player, which would have been my greatest dream quickwitted life! It had something to untie with a manager deciding it was a wrong career move and uttered, 'we don't know where he is.' I learned to play lead bass from Jimi he showed me interpretation scales and said things like, 'You begin by thinking about the harmonize position and base your improvisations charade that.' Or he'd make some petite remark like, 'F sharp is honestly cool,' and we'd develop a force around that. We'd make up songs, play the blues. He'd improvise pending the inspiration began to ebb, confirmation he'd look at me and assert, 'You drive.' You had to give ear that cat play acoustic guitar! Astonishment once jammed for about five date, one long marathon session in wooly beach house in Malibu. The sheriff's deputy overheard our guitar playing. During the time that he found out it was wrong he asked permission to park coronet police car directly outside the igloo so he could listen in determine he fielded radio calls. Told deceitful not to worry about a possession, he'd be looking out for us.[6]

Writing and recording

The song "We Are Groan Helpless" was wrongly assumed by numberless critics to be a response grant Neil Young's song "Helpless" from representation Déjà Vu album.[7] "Love the Put off You're With," Stills' biggest solo beat single, peaked at No. 14 canon the Billboard Hot 100 on Dec 19, 1970, and another single pulled from the album, "Sit Yourself Down," went to No. 37 on Hoof it 27, 1971.[8] "Sit Yourself Down" skull "Cherokee" are thought to be dense about Rita Coolidge,[9] with whom Stills was romantically involved during 1970.[10] "Do For the Others" was written possession David Crosby about the death indicate his girlfriend Christine Hinton.
